Posted by: thegreensoul - 12-01-2020, 10:42 AM - Forum: Everything Organic - No Replies

This is part 3 of our series in "How to start living organically"

Tip 3: Certified or not

With many products claiming to be organic these days, it’s very important to first check if these products have been certified or not. There are many conditions that will need to be fulfilled before a product gets the organic certification. So before you decide to buy an organic product do check the certification.

Benefits of buying local organic food
Posted by: magnolia - 11-30-2020, 10:28 AM - Forum: Everything Organic - No Replies

Having the option to purchase locally grown organic food has numerous benefits.

  1. Locally grown food is full of flavour.
Locally grown crops are picked at their peak of ripeness rather than being harvested early to be shipped and distributed to local retail stores. Many of the times produce at local markets have been picked within 24 hours of your purchase.
  2. Eating local food is eating seasonally.
Seasonal foods are full of flavour and taste better, they also contain higher levels of antioxidants that help in fighting free radicals. Eating locally also ensures its freshness.
  3. Local food has more nutrients.
The time between harvest and your table is much shorter for locally grown food, and it is less likely that the nutrient value has decreased.
  4. Local food supports the local economy.
Money spent with local farmers and growers all stays close to home and can be put back into your community.
  5. Local food benefits the environment.
By purchasing locally grown foods you help maintain farmland and reduce the pollution that would come from transporting goods from afar.
Locally grown organic food may be priced a little higher than conventional food, but that’s a small price to pay for better health.

  Babies and organic food
Posted by: MsFern - 11-28-2020, 10:31 AM - Forum: Everything Organic - No Replies

The term organic has come to represent clean food and with the rise in GMO foods people have become increasingly aware of the kind of food they feed their family.

As a parent you know how fragile your babies health can be, babies are weak; and their immune system still underdeveloped make them prone to falling sick easily. At this growing stage babies require clean and nutritious food to ensure their proper development and no age is too early to start eating organic.

Putting your child on an organic diet have benefits such as:

Develop their immune system

The chemicals and pesticides present in conventional food can affect babies as they are weaker and their immune system still needs to develop. Food that is not organic could be a threat to your baby's health.

GMO free

No one wants to feed their child food that has been modified in any way. The breakdown of food into nutrition and energy happens inside the body and consuming altered food could affect your babies growth.

Organic food is fresh

Preservatives are known to cause problems like hyperactive behavior in toddlers.  Fresh food normally possesses a high amount of essential nutrients and provides  better nourishment for babies and toddlers.

Your baby’s health is one that cannot be overlooked and when it comes down to choosing between organic which can be expensive and GMO; it is always better to invest in organic for the long term benefits that you will reap from a clean diet.

  An organic pregnancy diet
Posted by: magnolia - 11-27-2020, 10:44 AM - Forum: Everything Organic - No Replies

Pregnancy is a time when great care and attention needs to be given to women. During this time the fetus gets its food and nutrition through the food that the mother ingests.

An organic diet during pregnancy helps to minimize the amount of accidental pesticide consumption which can adversely affect both mother and child.

Researcher has discovered that some pesticides still manage to slip through the placenta and are passed on to your baby, and a foetus isn’t developed enough to get rid of chemicals. As a matter of fact, pesticides have been found in amniotic fluid, umbilical cord blood and breast milk. Eating organically while pregnant helps to keep the womb clear of chemicals, allowing the baby to grow properly and healthily.

Furthermore an organic diet helps avoid consumption of antibiotics that are injected into animals. In the long run, bacteria in animals treated with antibiotics can become resistant to those antibiotics. And a subsequent exposure to such bacteria may prove more difficult to treat in humans.

Organic foods are also supposed to be free of additives such as artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives, which have been linked to ADHD or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, in kids according to some studies.

A healthy baby is what every expectant parent wants. Being on an organic diet will help keep your baby and yourself free of toxins.

Facts that contributed to the organic market growth
Posted by: MsFern - 11-26-2020, 10:29 AM - Forum: Everything Organic - No Replies

No one wants to eat food that is harmful. But with the increased demand farmers moved from the traditional methods of farming to conventional methods that involved the use of chemicals and pesticides to accelerate the growth and increase the yields.

With an increase in digital literacy and global connectivity, consumers have begun to understand how chemicals used in conventional farming methods affect the body and have started looking for healthy alternatives. This search for clean toxic free food has played a role in the growth of the organic market.

People have become more health conscious:
The average Indian has now started making health and wellbeing top on their priority list. With the world being so interconnected and an increase in digital literacy people have become more aware of the harmful effects of chemicals and fertilizers used in farming.

Increase in disposable income.
According to India Brand Equity Foundation, the Indian middle class is expected to double its spending capacity by 2025. With the increase in disposable income and greater access, the average Indian consumer will not turn away from spending extra on quality food that has been produced sans chemicals.

Rise in exports for Indian organic products:
The government has been closely monitoring the rise in demand for organic products worldwide and India is taking advantage of that demand and producing export quality organic products. This rising trend is expected to continue to grow.

Support from the Government:
The Government of India and the several state governments have found a way to promote organic farming in the country. Setting up missions and schemes to assist organic farmers by giving them incentives to keep producing organic food.

These factors have helped the organic market to grow at an exponential rate. With the latest pandemic pointing to a weak immune system being a factor in falling sick, people are going to continue seeking healthier means of acquiring food.

  Health benefits of organic pulses
Posted by: Shanaz - 11-25-2020, 10:34 AM - Forum: Everything Organic - No Replies

Pulses can be served as curries or as seasoned snacks. Either ways they are healthy alternatives to our usual sweet and spicy snack which we can’t live without.

How you grow plants makes a difference in their nutritional value. Organic farming uses a toxin free method of farming, allowing food grown in this method to retain its nutritional value.

Health benefits of organic pulses:

Aids in healthy digestion
Organic pulses have richer fiber content, which eases digestion and keeps the bowel functioning normally.

Good for the heart
The rich content of fiber in organic pulses is known to improve heart health by reducing cholesterol levels, and the high amount of potassium can lower blood pressure.

Pulses are a healthy and inexpensive source of protein to add to your diet. But, this alone will not fulfill your daily needed proteins; adding legumes and vegetables will increase your protein intake.

A rich source of folate
Folate is a Vitamin B that is crucial to generate and maintain new cells. As organic pulses are rich in folate consumption of pulses during pregnancy is ideal to encourage rapid cell growth during infancy. Inadequate intake of folate can sometimes result in a child born with neural tube defect.

Aids in healthy growth
A diet with less amount of nutrients can adversely affect the growth of a child, which is why pulses are recommended for good health and growth.

Aids in weight loss
Pulses like chickpeas, lentils, and peas, when included in a diet, show positive results in weight loss. This is due to their effect of feeling full.

How to start living organically - Part 2
Posted by: thegreensoul - 11-24-2020, 10:30 AM - Forum: Everything Organic - No Replies

This is a continuation of How to start living organically - Part 1 (livelifefarmfresh.com)

Today I'll give you tip 2. Hopefully you were able to implement tip 1 and see how it may affect your daily life.

Tip 2: Buy organic locally

There are many stores that make locally grown produce available to consumers. These stores have tie-ups with farmers who are producing organic and chemical-free food locally.

Buying locally will reduce the greenhouse gas that may be produced during long-distance transportation, this will also pump money into the agricultural industry and help these farmers.

There are also farmers that bring their produce to the city selling it themselves to avoid the middleman or you can also visit the farms and buy directly from the farm.

  Ingredients used in Natural pesticides
Posted by: thegreensoul - 11-21-2020, 10:07 AM - Forum: Everything Organic - No Replies

Growing a garden or setting up a home farm takes time and effort and to have to see it all destroyed by a few pests is never easy. These pests feed on the plants and their leaves and can hamper the health and growth of your plants.

Chemical pesticides and insecticides may not be ideal for a home farm; instead, there are effective natural alternatives such as neem, garlic, chilli etc that can be used.

Neem Oil
Neem oil has been in use in India since ancient times. It is completely natural containing over 50 natural pesticides & its strong odour is effective in controlling and killing common pest in house plants.

Eucalyptus Oil

Essential oils are derived from natural plant products. They are easy to extract, biodegradable and do not leave any residue in soil and water; and eucalyptus is one such oil. Eucalyptus possesses a wide range of properties for pest management and is regarded as non-toxic to humans in moderation. This essential oil can act as a natural insect repellent and may help in controlling weeds.

Pepper Spray
Capsaicin is a compound in hot peppers. This compound can be used as a biochemical pesticide to repel and kill insects. Capsaicin kills insects by causing membrane damage and metabolic disruption. Most insects are repelled by pepper spray and will avoid plants treated with it.

Garlic is known for its pungent aroma, which is inviting to some and repellent to others, and it is this strong aroma that comes into play when used as a natural insecticide. It’s still undecided if garlic spray and chile spray are actually insecticides or more like insect repellents. Nonetheless, these everyday kitchen ingredients can be used to control the insect infestations in the garden.

Chrysanthemum Flower Tea
Pyrethrum is a powerful plant chemical found in the Chrysanthemum flower. This substance invades the nervous system of insects, rendering them immobile.

Tobacco Spray

Tobacco is as hazardous to pests as it is to humans. Tobacco spray was used by gardeners for centuries to kill pests, caterpillars, and aphids. This tobacco spray can be used on most plants, except plants in the solanaceous family (tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, etc.)

Just like your body has good and bad bacteria, your garden also has good and bad bugs. So be careful not to kill those bugs. When using homemade pesticides keep in mind to also monitor their effects and adjust the mixtures accordingly.

Health benefits of going organic

Covid-19 has brought about various changes in the eating behaviour of everyone. With immunity now being top on people's list for being healthy, eating clean food has become a priority. People have started rethinking about food.

Over the years people have had several options to choose from and Organic food has often occupied the first position in regards to eating clean and non-toxic food.

Organic Food Is More Nutritious

Since organic food has to be served fresh and cannot be processed as conventional food, it retains most of its national value and many studies found that organic food contains higher amounts of essential nutrients and minerals, including vitamin C, iron, and zinc.

Stronger Immune system

In order to increase output, conventional farmers tend to use an increased amount of chemicals and pesticides. These methods can leave long term side effects which cannot be ignored.

Consuming food that has been treated with excessive chemicals can lead to compromised immunity systems in people. As organic food is of a higher quality and is packed with various minerals and vitamins, consuming organic food could decline the risk to the immune system.

Organic Food Lacks Artificial Hormones And Antibiotics

In order to meet growing demands, modern farmers inject their livestock with hormones and antibiotics. These enter the human body when products like meat, milk, and eggs are consumed. These chemicals, which are proven to cause hormonal imbalances and drug-resistant bacteria in human beings, are a cause for great concern for many in the healthcare sector. Organic farming methods do not make use of artificial hormones and antibiotics which greatly reduces the risk of any complications in this regard.

Organic Food Has No Chemical Additives

Conventional farming produce is exposed to harmful chemicals in the form of pesticides, fertilisers, and preservatives that leave harmful residue. While these greatly improve productivity, they can be very harmful and in large amounts even cause irreversible damage. Organic food on the other hand, is produced through traditional farming methods which omit the use of any artificial compounds or preservatives, making it far safer for human consumption.
